Favorite Movie Lines, and A Fun(ny) Movie Line Story

Categories: fun, What the heck was THAT?

You might as well know this about me: I am notorious for quoting movies in middle of conversations. You might have even noticed that I do this sometimes on the blog.

I love to do it especially when the movie line somehow fits into the conversation as though it belonged there. Adds to the humor.

The Director does this, too. Sometimes The Director and I will have entire conversations using only movie lines, while The Wild One yanks out her hair.

Just as an example…here are just a sample of some of the movie lines I use most often. See if you can guess them. (Answers are below.)

  1. “Either you karate do, yes, or karate do, no. You karate do “guess so”– (*squish*) just like grape. Understand?”
  2. “It’s cute. It’s like a little clue.”
  3. “No. That’s not true. THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE!” (last part done as a scream)
  4. Pretty much the entire script of The Princess Bride.
So I was thinking of a funny story waaaay back when Aaroneous and I lived in the same town, playing on a worship team together. I was leading a worship team rehearsal, and we were doing a sound check or something, and the volume was way up on some of the instruments.

I stopped the music, shook my head, and said:

“Sorry, fellas. You’re just too darn loud.”

Without missing a beat, Aaroneous, standing behind me, leaned into his microphone and said in a deep voice:

Back to the Future. 1985.”

And he was right.

Soooo….you have any favorite movie lines?

Answers to movie quotes above:
  1. The Karate Kid, 1984
  2. Sleepless in Seattle, 1993
  3. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, 1980
  4. The Princess Bride, 1987

Words I See All the Time But Nobody Seems to Know What They Actually Mean

I am a bit of a wordsmith. I like to write, and I like to talk (and I like to hear myself talk–a dynamic that doesn’t happen in blogland). I like to think that I have a formidable command of the English language, with an expansive repertoire of vocabulary words.

Indubitably. (I just threw that in for effect.)

A short rabbit trail…I used to have this friend named Ernesto that could blow us all out of the water vocabulary-wise. He was a preacher, and he had no problem getting up in front of everybody and throwing words out there like parametrage (which isn’t even English) and look at us all like we were supposed to know what it meant. Anyhow.

Blogging Alone On Sunday Morning

One might be asking about now, “Why is Jeff blogging on his vacation? Shouldn’t he be busy doing something else?” Indeed, I’ve asked myself the exact same thing.

No, this isn’t OCD (although it could be). 🙂 The fact is, first–I am the only morning person in my family. Second–I am up at 6:30 each morning whether I want to be or not, because we have a dog whose bladder doesn’t care what time it is, and I have a family of not-morning people. Third–Denver is an hour behind Tulsa, which means I am now getting up at 5:30 every morning because it feels like 6:30.

Our Christmas Present to Ourselves…

…is a road trip!!

We’re back in Denver for a few days. Last time, we came here to participate in a conference. This time, we’re here to do some of the touristy things we didn’t get to do last time we were here.

First thing we did when we arrived was go to Maggiano’s Little Italy for dinner. Mmmmm….

We’re planning to visit Kathy while we’re here, and hopefully catch my friend Mike as well. But mainly we’ll be hanging downtown, and stuff like that.

Oh…and gas for the trip cost less than half what it did last time. 🙂

My Favorite and Un-Favorite Christmas Carols

Okay, so this local radio station that usually plays the hits of the “’80s, ’90s, and today” has been doing constant Christmas music since Thanksgiving. I love having that kind of thing around, especially while driving in the flower van. I commented to a coworker today that I am glad no one is in the van with me while the radio is playing. (Think Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle.)

My only complaint is that they only seem to play the same 20 Christmas songs on this station. Or maybe it’s twenty different versions of those 20 songs. Anyhow, it all runs together.

Do You Know What Day It Is??

That’s right, folks…it’s BLOG COMMENT DAY!!! (Sorry for shouting…hard to contain the excitement ’round here…)

Actually, it’s okay if you don’t know it’s Blog Comment Day. Apparently, this is the very first one. But it is my opinion that we don’t have nearly enough holidays between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so I’m all for this.

Blog Comment Day is the brainchild of John Smulo. Here’s what he says about it:
Though there may be 100 reasons why people blog, I’ve yet to meet a blogger who doesn’t appreciate comments. For this reason I’m starting Blog Comment Day on December 3, 2008. Here’s how it works:
  • On December 3, 2008 you will leave one comment on at least 5 different blogs.
  • Out of the 5 blogs you comment on, at least 2 of them will be blogs you haven’t commented on previously.
So if you haven’t yet commented on this blog…love to hear from you! And if you have commented before…love to hear from you! (But make sure you do a first time comment on at least two blogs today. I know I will.)

So…a post about blog comments, inviting you to comment on blog commenting….

What do you have to say about that?

(Don’t leave me hanging here….)

300 (The Post, not The Movie)

Let’s see…365 days in a year.

I started this blog on Dec. 30, 2007…it’s now December 1…carry the two…

This blog is 333 days old today.

300 posts in 333 days.

Not bad for a rookie. (Patting myself on the back…ow…I might need an icepack for that.)

Congratulatory cards and checks may be sent to my PO Box, or through Paypal.

Ironically, I almost missed this milestone. I just happened to notice I was on post 299, and I just couldn’t wait…I had to post 300 TODAY. 🙂

(Actually, this was a cheap trick to get to 300, and get it over with, so I can maybe blog again for real tomorrow.)

And on we go…

Just Another Ironic Example of How Words Don’t Mean What We Think They Should Mean

So this morning I go into my favorite coffee hangout (where I don’t drink coffee) and since it was cold this morning, I ordered a “tall” hot chocolate.

The girl behind the counter then holds up a little dinky cup. “You mean this small one?”

“You keep on using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

Soundtrack of Life

Categories: fun, music

Sometimes I don’t think we even realize how much music is in the background.

Today as I sit in this coffee shop, they are playing Christmas music. Like they have for days.

Walmart has been playing Christmas music since the day after Halloween. (Don’t they know Thanksgiving comes first? But then again, does anyone know any “Thanksgiving Carols?”)

Christmas is my favorite time of year; I just don’t want to be tired of it by the time it gets here.

Anywho….

This got me thinking about how much music punctuates our lives, whether or not we are paying attention.

About a year ago, I did something kind of fun for myself. I formed a “Life Soundtrack” playlist on my ipod. (I’d share it with you, but my ipod isn’t with me just now.) These were songs that I remember from marking moments and seasons in my life…what was playing on the radio when such-and-such was going on, and things like that.

Songs that would bring back a memory, something from my history.

So…do you have any choice picks from your “life soundtrack?”

How about this? In the comments today (if you’d care to participate)…tell me:
  1. Five songs that were playing at marking moments in your life;
  2. What one song would you say has been the most memorable or meaningful, and why.

I’ll chime in with my answer later today in the comments.

Ready? Go.
