Lightening Up

Categories: fun

So the last several posts have been so thick with thought that my brain hurts. I’m ready for a break. Not from blogging, mind you–that’s still fun–but from deeeeeep thiiiinnnking. So in an attempt to lighten up…here are some random thoughts.

I am pulling for David Cook to win American Idol (and not just because he’s from Tulsa). Yet, alas, I am too lazy to vote. Who do you like?

People Who Want to Talk to Bono

Categories: fun, music, What the heck was THAT?

I have a friend I meet with regularly at Starbucks–a musician friend. A couple of times he’s talked about how he’d like to sit down with Bono of U2 and ask him a few questions sometime. I chuckle inside when he tells me this because he sounds so matter-of-fact about it–like the biggest rockstar on the planet is going to sit down with him and have lunch or something.

But the other reason I’m chuckling…is that I feel exactly the same way. I would absolutely love to have lunch with Bono and pick his brain sometime. When I make it big in the music biz, he’ll probably come knock on my dressing room door after a concert sometime, and he and I can go get some coffee, and…

The Weekend: Rambling On About Nothing In Particular

Categories: fun, Meanderings (look it up)

So I’m sitting here in Panera Bread on a Saturday morning, squinting out the window at the beautiful day on tap, letting my mind wander while my blog page sits open on my laptop, trying to think about what to write. So I’m thinking, Why don’t I just sort of write as I think? Then I can do two things at once. And since I’m trying to learn the art of multi-tasking…there you go.

Thanks to all of you who wrote comments to encourage me the other day while I second-and-third-guessed myself. I am doing a bit better. It turns out that the symptoms of second-guessing-itis can be sharply reduced by ingesting several large glasses of a fruity alcoholic beverage. But I wouldn’t know; I don’t drink. It’s kind of a funny thought, though. (Aren’t you glad I’m writing what pops into my head?)

De-Construction: Sharing the Love by Linkage

Categories: changing mindsets, fun

Apparently, unwittingly, and happily (note the amazing use of adverbage), I have found myself in the midst of a wonderful ongoing conversation in the blogosphere. Many are sharing where they are at in their journeys of “de-construction”, of re-thinking and sometimes leaving behind long-standing mindsets about how to “do church” and what “church” should look like, as well as what their own path of discipleship should look like. A lot of great thoughts and comments are being posted by others, both here in the comments and on other blogs.

Here are some more pieces of the conversation, other postings which are worth checking out:

A Conversation I Had Today with My Godson (a.k.a. "JoJo") While The Wild One (a.k.a. "MiMi") Was Resting in the Other Room

JoJo: PawPaw? PawPaw? PawPaw? (spoken rapid-fire like a machine gun)

Me: (looking over the couch) Yes, JoJo?

(JoJo is sitting on the window ledge, which is low enough for him to sit on.)

JoJo: Minshof adhl minew sit onna ledge! (TRANSLATION: Look at me, I’m sitting on the ledge!)

Me: You’re sitting on the ledge, huh?

JoJo: PawPaw sit? (TRANSLATION: PawPaw sit?)

(I observe that the ledge is just narrow enough to hold about 25 percent of my behind.)

Me: No, PawPaw’s too big to sit on the ledge.

Da Movies…and Spiritual Truth

As you no doubt have read below, my son The Director turned 18 this week. He is passionate about his dream to be a filmmaker, and it’s more than a proud father’s boast to say he really has an eye for it. He’s a natural. Seriously. No, seriously.

Anyway, suffice it to say we are movie buffs around here. And here’s something else interesting: God speaks to us through the movies. No, seriously.
