Favorite Lines from "The Princess Bride"

So, okay, I’m strange.

I have this thing about injecting movie lines into conversations without warning. People who recognize the movie line usually laugh; others look at me like I have Turret’s or something.

The Princess Bride, in my opinion, has probably more fun and memorable lines than any other movie I’ve seen. So for your amazement amusement…below are five of my favorite lines from this classic:

5. “No more rhymes, now, I mean it.” “Anybody want a peanut?”

4. “Mawwiage. Mawwiage is wot bwings us toogevah tooday. Mawwiage, that bwessed awwangement, that dweam wifin a dweam…”

3. “Tyrone, you know how much I love watching you work, but I’ve got my country’s 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder and Guilder to frame for it; I’m swamped.”

2. “Lemme ‘splain. No, there is too much. Lemme sum up.”

And the number one favorite line from The Princess Bride….

1. “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

So…any other Princess Bride fans out there? What’s your favorite line?

Musician. Composer. Recovering perfectionist. Minister-in-transition. Lover of puns. Hijacker of rock song references. Questioner of the status quo. I'm not really a rebel. Just a sincere Christ-follower with a thirst for significance that gets me into trouble. My quest has taken me over the fence of institutional Christianity. Here are some of my random thoughts along the way. Read along, join in the conversation. Just be nice.

There are soooo many good lines in The Princess Bride. But, one of my favorites has to be, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”

My number one is also yours. But I can add these favorites that get bantered around in my house a lot…

~You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

~I’m not a witch, I’m your wife. But after what you just said, I’m not even sure I want to be that any more.

    Alan & Heidi,
Good ones. But…what about the word ITSELF–the one that we don’t think it means what we think it means?? The word that in ITSELF is an incredible line, especially when shouted with a lisp?

    “INCONCEIVEABLE!”

My husband and I went to Mandy Patinkin’s concert several years ago when he performed at the Mabee Center. After his ovation, the house lights went out and we thought it was over.

Suddenly, they came back on – he was standing center stage and said “I can’t come to a college town and not do this.”

He assumed the sword fighting stance and said, “My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die.”

The house lights went black and the crowd went wild. That’s an awesome way to end a show! Absolutely fantastic!

    Oh, yeah….

“Have fun stormin’ the castle, boys!”
    “Think they’ll make it?”
    “It’d take a miracle.”

    or

    “L-L-L-L-L-iar!!!”

    or

    “He’s only mostly dead.”

    or

… well, it is a favorite for me, too. Have you read the book? It’s even better than the movie – honest. 😉

  6. Steve Oberg

    How about,

    “I don’t es’pose you could a’speed thin’s up?”

“I could a’give you my word as a spaniard. No good. I’ve known too many spaniards.”

  7. Michael G.

I am not sure if these are the exact words, but when Wesley is about to be tortured the man with six fingers says something like, “So please be honest, this is for posterity”.

Well…let me see…there are just so many!! There’s hardly a day that goes by without something from this movie sneaking its way into my thoughts of conversation.

Here a few spots that are really more “moments” than particular quotes:

    1) Buttercup kisses the king. She asks what it was for. She responds because he has always been kind to her, and she won’t be seeing again because she’s killing herself once she reaches the honeymoon suite.

His response: “Won’t that be nice”…and then to the Queen…”She kissed me!”

    2) The albino in a gravely voice: “The pit of despair! Don’t even think…”
    Hack-hack-cough-cough.

Now in a clear voice: “Don’t even think about trying to escape.”

    3) Ahh!! Here’s a quote from Inigo: “There’s not a lot of money in revenge.”

    4) And Wesley to Humperdink: “…you miserable vomitous mass…”

I could go on and on for “an hour…a good hour. Yeah.”

    Cherylzyx, great story. Thanks!

    Katherine, thanks for the tip.

Mork–??? Hello? “The Princess Bride”? 😀

    Steve–I love the Spaniard. 🙂

Aaroneous, I knew you wouldn’t let me down. 😀

What’s the one about the mutton, lettuce and tomato–the MLT, best when the mutton’s sliced real thin?

And also when some old hag shouts out from the crowd, “Booo… BOOOOOH! Bow down! Bow down to her. Bow to the queen of slime–the queen of refuse and putris.”
