So I’ve been pondering how my thinking has changed over the past few years, and how I can’t stomach so much of the Christian-ese lingo and churchy behavior anymore–which is funny because I used to be all about that stuff not too very long ago. I don’t go near Christian television anymore, I don’t listen to Christian radio hardly at all, and I usually can’t stand to listen to sermons anymore. And I feel very out of place in most church meetings.
And I know why I’m like this now. And it’s not that I’ve abandoned my faith.

On the journey, every so often it is helpful to take a look backward–not in a bad way (“remember Lot’s wife”), but simply to take inventory of where you have come. Some people say in cliche manner that we must only live in the moment, that we only have today, that we can’t change the past and don’t know the future, so let’s just look at the road before us, no looking back.

Uh, oh. I’ve been thinking again. ๐
I’ve been working my way through The Reason for God by Timothy Keller, which has an interesting take on explaining and validating the Christian faith to intellectual skeptics–a particular group the author comes into contact with often. This has got me thinking, not just about what the book says, but about the issue of faith and intellect in general.

Every time I see one of those probing celebrity interviews, like where Barbara Walters is scouring the soul of some Hollywood icon, the question often comes up: Any regrets?
And when said celebrity smiles brightly and says, “No regrets,”–which is what the answer usually is–I wince inside.
In truth, I think anyone who says they have no regrets is either in denial, lying, or very, very rebellious.

Two hundred thirty some-odd years ago, we colonial Americans had an argument with the “motherland” about taxes and representation and probably a few other things. (Not having been there, you know…it gets a little fuzzy after so much time.)
Anyway…232 years ago today, a bunch of us Yankees signed a document declaring our independence from Great Britain. And after fighting with them for several years, we eventually won the independence we had declared.

In response to one of my posts about the mistaken identity of the church, I got an interesting comment from a guy named Michael who expressed some concerns because he felt I was using too broad of a brush stroke when I spoke of pastors and others getting fearful over people finding alternative methods of expressing their faith. I felt it was significant enough to devote a post to it. Let me quote him here:

Hereโs an interesting irony to consider. Seminarians, and churchgoers in general, consider a sermon to be “good” when it has at least three solid points, and not more than five. Nonfiction books, especially the self-help or Christian kind, are considered good when they spell out a problem methodically and give you a certain number of formulaic steps to solve said problem.
But apparently God, who inspired what we know as the Bible, didnโt get the memo on presenting seven steps to success or five principles for getting to know Him.
