I Don’t Know How To Describe How I’m Feeling Just Now

It feels kind of like a deep stirring in the soul, something difficult to put to words.

It feels like a bittersweet blend of pathos, longing and hope…like you want to cry, but you aren’t sad, and you can’t find a reason.

Yes, guys have these moments. We just don’t like to admit it. 🙂

It’s a deep feeling, almost like a groaning…almost something best expressed in music or art…but it isn’t quite clear yet how it should be expressed. Like something wants to be emerge, to be born from the intangible mass of emotion.

Geesh, that’s sappy.

True Confessions About Church

Can we tawlk? (That’s “talk” in Brooklynese.)

I’ve come to a rather interesting, embarrassing and disturbing realization about all my years growing up in institutional church. In spending much of my childhood, and most of my adult life, inside the walls of churches…in gaining favor in church circles…in becoming a leader in church…in having a burgeoning ministry “career”…

…I never really liked church services.

Gasp!

It’s true. Oh, I enjoyed it enough when I had something to do; I enjoyed playing the piano, leading worship, doing “my thing”. And I truly love to experience God’s presence, especially in the context of worship. Those parts are great.

But sitting through the church meeting itself? Never really did it for me.

Things I Never Would Have Thought

Categories: Meanderings (look it up)

Since I began this journey of faith, there have been many things I never saw coming, that I look back and say, “I never would have thought that would have happened.”

For example, I never would have thought…

…that I would be a minister.

…that I would become a worship leader.

…that as a worship leader, I would become a pastor.

…that as a worship leader, I would become disillusioned and bored with the type of worship I was doing.

…that as a pastor, I would become a house church pastor.

Mixed-Up Bag of New Year’s Day Emotions

As I wake up to 2009 (I didn’t make it to midnight last night), I feel a mixture of emotions. And you now have the amazing privilege of sitting here and reading this while I sort them all out. (Don’t you feel honored?)

If you want to know what 2008 was like for my family…well, it depends on who you ask. Ask The Wild One, and she’ll tell you it was one of the best years of her life. She got a revelation about living life, living in the moment, taking opportunity…and she lived it. Actually I think it was a word to all of us in the house church, but she was possibly the only one who really “got it.” Anyhow, living that out has totally transformed her. She is healthier, happier, and more hopeful. (Alliteration not intended.)

Pre-Christmas Ramblings

For those of you waiting with baited breath for part two of “Dangerous Musings on Equality“…breathe. And don’t worry; it’s coming soon, likely after Christmas.

For the time being…it’s been a bit harder to post, because the closer we get to Christmas, the more my extra flower delivery jobs have kicked in. Lotssss of people ordering flowers this year (don’t get any ideas, I’m not telling you where I work). It’s a lot of fun, actually. What’s not to love about making people smile? But this time of year it gets grueling.

Finally, A Large Bloc of Time In Which to Blog…Now What the Crap Do I Write?

Today is the first day in almost 2 weeks that I have not had to rush to some job, or investigate some job opportunity.

It also happens to be icy on the roads here today, and a balmy 19 degrees outside…which makes it a perfect opportunity to sit by the fire and blog to my heart’s content.

Judge Not

So in between all my other busy-ness, I’ve been (slowly) working my way through David Kinnaman’s book UnChristian. And the chapter about how Christians are perceived as judgmental…

…well, it’s cleaning my clock.

The bottom line is that we are perceived by outsiders as judgmental because, for the most part, we are judgmental. (In other words, the perception is mostly justified.) And a lot of our judgmental attitudes aren’t so blatant as the angry, hate-filled, anti-gay protesters we see on the news. Many of them are a lot more subtle, coming off as condescending and self-superior. We might try to act with kindness toward a “sinner”, but that person will pick up the vibe that we see ourselves above them, stooping down to be kind to them.

There are a lot of people out there who aren’t too proud to receive charity. But nobody likes false charity. Nobody likes charity with a side order of guilt and judgmentalism.

An Interesting Reminder

So I stopped in to my favorite “blogging place” this morning–my local coffee shop where I don’t drink coffee. I’m familiar there now, and most of the staff knows me by name and have had conversations with me.

This morning, one of the girls had a question for me. “I know you told me you were a pastor, but somehow not a ‘church’ pastor? I was trying to describe it to my husband the other day, but I didn’t really understand.”

“I’m a house church pastor,” I replied.

“That’s right, you said that before,” said the other girl. (Both girls are Christians.)

(Yawn) ‘Tis the Season?? (or, So Many Zombies)

Bells are ringing everywhere.

‘Tis the season for the Salvation Army bell-ringers. They are out in front of stores all over the country…out in the cold (when it is cold, that is). You gotta respect that. And it’s a good cause.
