Thoughts on Independence Day

Categories: Meanderings (look it up)

Two hundred thirty some-odd years ago, we colonial Americans had an argument with the “motherland” about taxes and representation and probably a few other things. (Not having been there, you know…it gets a little fuzzy after so much time.)

Anyway…232 years ago today, a bunch of us Yankees signed a document declaring our independence from Great Britain. And after fighting with them for several years, we eventually won the independence we had declared.

With that history between us, I marvel at the deep friendship that has emerged between our two nations. After fighting each other vigorously, we’ve fought side by side in numerous wars and cooperated in many other efforts. Hands down, in good times and bad (and even when disagreeing with our politics)…the UK has been America’s greatest ally. And I find that to be amazingly awesome.

Lyn over in the UK wished us all a Happy Independence Day today. I think that kind of greeting actually means more to me coming from across the pond. When we Americans say that to each other, we’re kind of patting ourselves on the back. 🙂 But coming from the guys we “beat”–yeah, I know it was a long time ago. But it’s still pretty cool. 🙂

The memories of 9/11 are still etched in my mind, as with so many others. But one of the most moving memories for me was watching on the television on September 12, while the British played “The Star-Spangled Banner” (our national anthem) at Buckingham Palace as a show of solidarity and friendship with the U.S. Knowing all our history together, I cannot think of a more honorable thing they could have done. It might seem like a small token to some; but it absolutely broke me.

So…fellow Americans, enjoy and appreciate your freedoms today. And a shout-out to our friends across the pond. 🙂 Happy 4th.

Hmm… you’re right, it is amazing how enemies can become allies. Happy 4th, to our friend in Brittian and beyond.
