Here are some of my random thoughts along the way. Read along, join in the conversation. Just be nice.

A Near Miss that I Was Too Stupid Busy to Even Realize

Categories: weather

The weather in Tulsa gets weird sometimes this time of year. I’m really into weather, so I like to pay attention to it. But recently I’ve been too stupid busy to pay attention.

Last night it was unseasonably warm and windy, and we had a thunderstorm blow through around 11:30 pm. We had just gone to bed, and we could hear the thunder and wind and the sideways rain hitting the bedroom window. I had the thought, Maybe I should go turn on the TV and see what’s happening. But since the news guys had already said the storms would probably not be severe, and since I was so wornded out from the extra work I’m doing…I said to myself, Nah. I’ll just go to sleep. So I did.

An Interesting Reminder

So I stopped in to my favorite “blogging place” this morning–my local coffee shop where I don’t drink coffee. I’m familiar there now, and most of the staff knows me by name and have had conversations with me.

This morning, one of the girls had a question for me. “I know you told me you were a pastor, but somehow not a ‘church’ pastor? I was trying to describe it to my husband the other day, but I didn’t really understand.”

“I’m a house church pastor,” I replied.

“That’s right, you said that before,” said the other girl. (Both girls are Christians.)

Wornded Out

I’m just plum tarred. (tired)

On Friday, an opportunity for extra Christmas income came my way, so I took it. I’ve been working all weekend on a project, and I’ll be involved with it all this week as well. But I asked God for this opportunity, so I’m glad it happened.

So this is Sunday night, and the only chance I’ll have to rest between my normal stuff and the extra work. So I’m couch-potatoing in front of the TV and the fireplace…and blogging about nothing in particular, except to tell you…I’m worn out.

Talk to you soon.

The Shape and the Substance

Mark Main at The Untried has written two posts about “Assumptions”, reflecting on the flak he has taken in his departure from institutional church, and the assumptions those in his circle have made about his faith and his motives. The list was actually surprising to me, how many things have been said about him and his family–everything from how he’s a heretic to how he’s leading his own children away from God.

(Yawn) ‘Tis the Season?? (or, So Many Zombies)

Bells are ringing everywhere.

‘Tis the season for the Salvation Army bell-ringers. They are out in front of stores all over the country…out in the cold (when it is cold, that is). You gotta respect that. And it’s a good cause.

Do You Know What Day It Is??

That’s right, folks…it’s BLOG COMMENT DAY!!! (Sorry for shouting…hard to contain the excitement ’round here…)

Actually, it’s okay if you don’t know it’s Blog Comment Day. Apparently, this is the very first one. But it is my opinion that we don’t have nearly enough holidays between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so I’m all for this.

Blog Comment Day is the brainchild of John Smulo. Here’s what he says about it:
Though there may be 100 reasons why people blog, I’ve yet to meet a blogger who doesn’t appreciate comments. For this reason I’m starting Blog Comment Day on December 3, 2008. Here’s how it works:
  • On December 3, 2008 you will leave one comment on at least 5 different blogs.

300 (The Post, not The Movie)

Let’s see…365 days in a year.

I started this blog on Dec. 30, 2007…it’s now December 1…carry the two…

This blog is 333 days old today.

300 posts in 333 days.

Not bad for a rookie. (Patting myself on the back…ow…I might need an icepack for that.)

Congratulatory cards and checks may be sent to my PO Box, or through Paypal.

Ironically, I almost missed this milestone. I just happened to notice I was on post 299, and I just couldn’t wait…I had to post 300 TODAY. 🙂

(Actually, this was a cheap trick to get to 300, and get it over with, so I can maybe blog again for real tomorrow.)

And on we go…

Speaking the Same Language, but Not Communicating

Categories: Meanderings (look it up)

Have you ever been in a conversation with someone where you knew you were both speaking the same language–even the same dialect–but somehow it felt like you were speaking different languages? Where somehow something got lost in mix, and you simply weren’t communicating?

I remember one time being in deep south Texas, near the Louisiana border, and listening to a guy with Cajun influences speaking to his son about “mudding”–driving four-wheelers through the mud. It was the funniest thing to me, because they were both so excited and animated about what they were saying, and they were speaking English, but between the dialect and the lingo I couldn’t understand a word they were saying. I just knew they were happy from the nonverbals they were using.

Just Another Ironic Example of How Words Don’t Mean What We Think They Should Mean

So this morning I go into my favorite coffee hangout (where I don’t drink coffee) and since it was cold this morning, I ordered a “tall” hot chocolate.

The girl behind the counter then holds up a little dinky cup. “You mean this small one?”

“You keep on using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”
