Perhaps I’m Just In the Mood to Be Snarky, But…

Categories: What the heck was THAT?

When I saw this sign on the door of a storefront church around the corner from where I live, I just couldn’t help but share it:

Lots of fun stuff went through my head when I saw this, but I’ll let you speak first. Thoughts?

Musician. Composer. Recovering perfectionist. Minister-in-transition. Lover of puns. Hijacker of rock song references. Questioner of the status quo. I'm not really a rebel. Just a sincere Christ-follower with a thirst for significance that gets me into trouble. My quest has taken me over the fence of institutional Christianity. Here are some of my random thoughts along the way. Read along, join in the conversation. Just be nice.

Quite a change from the early days of the church, when the entire gathering was based around food. 🙂

I tried to look at this sign from the perspective of a non-believer or a seeker. As one friend pointed out, the operative word on the sign is NO. You’ve told the person NO three times before they even walk in the door. To me, it paints a picture of God as one of those snooty, clean-freak relatives who won’t let the kids touch anything in the house. (Let alone the fact that “God’s house” is not a building at all.)

One other thing worth mentioning: there was also a “FOR LEASE” sign in one of the other windows.

The one I was told just today in a store was “Come back to church so you can be back with the Lord”. Un-Be-Leave-Able!

    Sigh

This could be my old church. I wouldn’t be surprised if they put up a similar sign after I left.

My departure followed a meeting with the church leaders where I was called on the carpet for having a cup of coffee on stage with me when I was in the worship team. It would have been ok if it was a bottle of water but coffee was a big no no (although the main complainant admitted that it was partly cos I didn’t bring her one).

    Sigh
