The Phantom of the Laptop

Hey–sounds like a good name for a musical or something…

I use an older, hand-me-down laptop for my mobile blogging. No, older isn’t the word. Ancient is a better word.

Anyway…there is evidence that some sort of phantom lives in this little box. No kidding. There are two reasons I say this. First–several times now I have thought something was going wrong with this laptop that meant it was giving up the ghost, and somehow it made itself better. Second–when one thing corrects itself, another thing starts to go wrong. That tells me the phantom likes to travel.

Case in point. The phantom decided for awhile to roost in my computer screen. So inadvertently it would start messing with the colors on the screen, and areas of the screen would look “snowy”, like I was looking at an old TV with rabbit ears. It looked like pure interference, and it would phase in and out randomly. Then it got so it looked like that all the time, and it got so bad I thought any moment the laptop would crash and I’d be back to blogging at my desk.

Then, without explanation…the snowy screen stopped. For months now, my screen has been completely back to normal.

But apparently, now the phantom has decided to take up residence in the keyboard. Now, quite frequently, when I turn this thing on, various keys on the left-center part of the keyboard (r,t,f,g,v,b) decide not to respond. So the word “thing” comes out “hin” when I type. Sometimes it gets better if I press and hold the key–but it’s random, so it’s not the key itself, it’s something electrical. Sometimes it takes rebooting the computer entirely to correct the problem–and that usually does. Today, I had to reboot twice just to type this post.

I’m just waiting for strange, haunting organ music to start coming through the speakers.

So…will my laptop finally “give up the ghost”, so to speak? 🙂 Or will this problem correct itself? And will the phantom decide to travel somewhere else? Can you pray deliverance prayers over laptops? Once again, I have more questions than answers… 🙂

Anyway…gotta go make some people happy today by bringing them flowers. Back to deeper thoughts soon.

    Jeff,
It’s so funny that you posted this blog. I actually have been having some interesting and very odd experiences with my laptop the past month. I think mine is getting a bit “old,” too. It’s funny how laptops “age” so quickly. Mine is only about 21/2-3 years old, but in “computer age” that’s “old.” In my case, I think it has the “topsy-turvy” disease. What I mean is that it’s been loading EVERYTHING at super slow speeds (all programs, etc). But, I noticed that if I actually set the whole thing at different angles, like prop it 95 degrees on it’s right-side, etc, it will actually start and finish loading immediately. It’s really strange. I have figured out different angles and “sides” to increase it’s speed. It’s like some sort of weird physics issue. Ha ha! Isn’t this funny?! Ah…the glories of technology. Hee hee!

    Blessings,
    ~Amy 🙂
