I am not sure why I haven’t made this a topic sooner, but…I’m into music. A lot.

As far as what it is I do, especially in a ministry sense…music is probably my primary gift. I am a songwriter, a singer, a keyboard player, a worship leader. I’ve been musically inclined my whole life, and although I’m pushing 41 now, there are still a lot of things I want to do in this area of my life. I’ll probably talk more about that stuff later on…for now, I just thought it would be good to introduce you to this part of me.

So…for starters, here are some random facts about my musical journey….

  1. I have loved music as long as I can remember. One of my favorite things to do throughout my childhood was sit in my room and play records. (Remember those vinyl things?) Today, my “listening room” is mostly my car. Or my ipod while I’m working out.
  2. When I was three, I wanted to be Johnny Cash. I once earned my mom a free beer at a local pizza parlor by entertaining the guests by singing along to Johnny Cash songs on the jukebox (a primitive form of karaoke).
  3. I no longer want to be Johnny Cash. First–he’s dead. Second–I now know about the drugs. But he’s still a lifetime favorite.
  4. I began playing guitar at age 4, but lost interest in the guitar when my mom bought me a piano. I am preparing to buy a guitar and re-learn that instrument.
  5. I used to make up little songs and sing them to myself while walking to or from school–providing unintended entertainment for many of my peers who heard me walking and singing.
  6. As a pre-teen, I aspired to be a classical concert pianist. These days, my classical chops are pretty much gone.
  7. As a child, I preferred country music. However, I actually have a broad range of musical likes now. I can find something I enjoy in nearly every genre. Rock and pop/rock are generally my favorites.
  8. I listen to some of my teenage son’s music on my ipod, and actually enjoy it.
  9. I get a kick out of songs with silly or stupid lyrics. For this reason, I was one of the very few people who enjoyed the movie “Ishtar.” Most of my songs, however, are not silly.
  10. My instrument of choice during the late 1980s was a Yamaha DX-7 keyboard. (Anyone remember those?)
  11. Mostly, I write and play worship songs. But I’m in a season where I am expanding my vision and the realm of possibility, exploring other options, styles, and sounds. A reinvention of sorts.
  12. U2 is probably my favorite band, and Bono my favorite performer. What amazing stage presence.

So…what about you? What’s your favorite kind of music, and why?

Musician. Composer. Recovering perfectionist. Minister-in-transition. Lover of puns. Hijacker of rock song references. Questioner of the status quo. I'm not really a rebel. Just a sincere Christ-follower with a thirst for significance that gets me into trouble. My quest has taken me over the fence of institutional Christianity. Here are some of my random thoughts along the way. Read along, join in the conversation. Just be nice.
