God In Our Image

In this post from last year, I commented that an infinite God uses a wide range of metaphors in Scripture to describe Himself to finite man. For example, sometimes He describes Himself as a Father, sometimes as a Bridegroom, sometimes as a Judge. But because every metaphor breaks down at some point, we need all of the metaphors to get a balanced understanding of the infinite nature of God. If we get too fixated on one or two of the metaphors, our picture of God will become warped.

Things I Never Would Have Thought

Since I began this journey of faith, there have been many things I never saw coming, that I look back and say, “I never would have thought that would have happened.”

For example, I never would have thought…

…that I would be a minister.

…that I would become a worship leader.

…that as a worship leader, I would become a pastor.

…that as a worship leader, I would become disillusioned and bored with the type of worship I was doing.

…that as a pastor, I would become a house church pastor.

Words I See All the Time But Nobody Seems to Know What They Actually Mean

I am a bit of a wordsmith. I like to write, and I like to talk (and I like to hear myself talk–a dynamic that doesn’t happen in blogland). I like to think that I have a formidable command of the English language, with an expansive repertoire of vocabulary words.

Indubitably. (I just threw that in for effect.)

A short rabbit trail…I used to have this friend named Ernesto that could blow us all out of the water vocabulary-wise. He was a preacher, and he had no problem getting up in front of everybody and throwing words out there like parametrage (which isn’t even English) and look at us all like we were supposed to know what it meant. Anyhow.

Mixed-Up Bag of New Year’s Day Emotions

As I wake up to 2009 (I didn’t make it to midnight last night), I feel a mixture of emotions. And you now have the amazing privilege of sitting here and reading this while I sort them all out. (Don’t you feel honored?)

If you want to know what 2008 was like for my family…well, it depends on who you ask. Ask The Wild One, and she’ll tell you it was one of the best years of her life. She got a revelation about living life, living in the moment, taking opportunity…and she lived it. Actually I think it was a word to all of us in the house church, but she was possibly the only one who really “got it.” Anyhow, living that out has totally transformed her. She is healthier, happier, and more hopeful. (Alliteration not intended.)

I’m Back, The Blog Is One Year Old, and…Oh, By the Way, Happy New Year

Got back to Tulsa last night; got up this morning and delivered flowers. Needless to say, there has been little time for blogging the past couple of days. But I’m back now. Hi, there.

During this lapse…yesterday, to be exact…this blog turned one year old. Woo hoo!

I’ll be back on track within the next couple of days. Until then…hope your New Year is happy!

Blogging Alone On Sunday Morning

One might be asking about now, “Why is Jeff blogging on his vacation? Shouldn’t he be busy doing something else?” Indeed, I’ve asked myself the exact same thing.

No, this isn’t OCD (although it could be). 🙂 The fact is, first–I am the only morning person in my family. Second–I am up at 6:30 each morning whether I want to be or not, because we have a dog whose bladder doesn’t care what time it is, and I have a family of not-morning people. Third–Denver is an hour behind Tulsa, which means I am now getting up at 5:30 every morning because it feels like 6:30.

Dangerous Musings About Equality (part 2)

In part 1 of this series, I began talking about the idea of equality, about the belief that people should be treated as equals without regard to race, gender, socio-economic standing, or other differentiating qualities–especially in the church. I mused that there really is not a strong emphasis on equality in the Scripture, but rather a mandate not to show favoritism in the church, and a mandate to prefer others above ourselves rather than treat them as equals. I referred to this as moving past equality into the celebration of uniqueness. And I suggested that “equality” is a mathematical term that we inadvertently use to draw comparisons on the value of people, and that this is why we need to move past it.

Our Christmas Present to Ourselves…

…is a road trip!!

We’re back in Denver for a few days. Last time, we came here to participate in a conference. This time, we’re here to do some of the touristy things we didn’t get to do last time we were here.

First thing we did when we arrived was go to Maggiano’s Little Italy for dinner. Mmmmm….

We’re planning to visit Kathy while we’re here, and hopefully catch my friend Mike as well. But mainly we’ll be hanging downtown, and stuff like that.

Oh…and gas for the trip cost less than half what it did last time. 🙂
