Wayward Son

Musician. Composer. Recovering perfectionist. Minister-in-transition. Lover of puns. Hijacker of rock song references. Questioner of the status quo. I'm not really a rebel. Just a sincere Christ-follower with a thirst for significance that gets me into trouble. My quest has taken me over the fence of institutional Christianity. Here are some of my random thoughts along the way. Read along, join in the conversation. Just be nice.

We Interrupt this Blog on Account of Weather…

Well, I wanted snow…

The Wild One took this picture within the past hour; this is Olde Town Arvada, just up the steps and across the railroad tracks from our flat.
It started snowing last night–and hasn’t stopped since. Denver metro has gotten about 12 inches so far. We’re about 10 minutes northwest of downtown Denver, and we have at least 18 inches on the ground.

Let’s just say we’re having to get a bit creative with taking the dog to his, er, “spot.” Can’t say I blame him…if the snow was coming up to MY chin, I wouldn’t want to go outside, either.

AAAAnnnd…the news weather people tell us these totals could easily double by tomorrow night!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled blog.

How’m I Doin’ (For Real This Time)

Categories: How I am, random stuff

So I’m ready to talk about some personal stuff, some real life stuff, some…stuff.

My family and I have been in Denver now nearly two months. We definitely love it here and have no regrets for moving. What is interesting, though, is that the season of transition didn’t really end when we made the move. We have made such a drastic life change that it is taking some time to find our feet underneath us. As friendly and warm as most Denverites are, forming meaningful relationships still takes time…but it is happening.

How’m I Doin’? (A Post for Everybody, but Especially for You, Barb)

(Not really a picture of me. Photo by ginafish.)

So I’m all busy writing about stuff I’m thinking about, and what I think about that stuff, and so on, and so forth…when a couple of weeks ago I see this post from Barb. And she’s all like, “I don’t give a rip what you THINK anymore…I want to know how you ARE. In fact, I’m not even going to read you people’s stinkin’ blogs if you keep telling me what you THINK about stuff. Tell me how you ARE.”

I’m paraphrasing, of course, but that was the gist. I mean, she could have said it that way…

Let’s Have a Blogging Revival!

**TONGUE IN CHEEK ALERT**

I’ve had this blog going now for nearly two years. When I entered the blogosphere, blogging was all the rage. I found a whole group of people grappling with the same issues I was, and we learned from each other as we read each others’ stuff.

But lately I’ve found people getting a bit lax with their blogging. First they say stuff like, “I haven’t blogged in awhile; I’ve been busy with ‘real life’ things.” As if blogging wasn’t life.

On Heaven and Hell, and Possibly Asking the Wrong Questions

Categories: Meanderings (look it up), theological questions

On Sunday I listened to my friend Eugene talk to a gathering of believers about the question: “What happens when we die?” He talked about how he believes in a heaven and a hell, but admitted that there really isn’t very much detailed in Scripture about either. Nor does God seem to be big on giving us a lot of details in the Bible about what death looks like or feels like. It’s kind of like, you have to be there–to experience it–to know what it is. (Of course, once we cross that threshold, most of us don’t come back.)

Interestingly, when Jesus was about to die, He was pretty vague with His disciples about what to expect on the other side, as well. They wanted specifics, details, and He basically said, “Trust Me.” Here’s a snippet of the conversation in John 14:

Wandering but Not Lost (excerpt)

Categories: Meanderings (look it up)

Here is an excerpt from my latest post on the Communitas Collective blog:

I know there are a lot of us “out here” who for one reason or another have wandered away from church as usual. For me, there are times when I feel very peaceful about that. There are other times when I feel a twinge of guilt or fear, where my more “religious” side starts telling me I’ve lost my way. I don’t know if it’s the same for you. But it is especially strong when I’m in a place where nothing seems to make sense, where nothing seems familiar.

Moments of Truth About Church Worship

Categories: changing mindsets, Meanderings (look it up)

Leading worship again in a regular Sunday gathering has been interesting for me. Having been out of that scene for so long, and then walking back in, I’m seeing things with a different set of eyes, and I’m seeing myself as well–how much I have apparently changed.

What Is "Spiritual?"

Categories: Things that make our brains hurt

Okay…brain rattling time again…

We throw some words around without really knowing what they mean–or perhaps we have differing meanings in our minds for them.

A lot of times I’ll hear someone say about their current journey (and I’ve said it myself): “I don’t feel very spiritual right now.” Or we’ll otherwise differentiate “spiritual” activity from other activities, or classify certain things as “spiritual” and others as “non-spiritual.”

You know, I think even Paul did this a little bit. He would talk about the difference between natural and spiritual sometimes, and on a couple of occasions he admonished the church to sing psalms, hymns, and “spiritual songs.” He didn’t just say, “songs”–he classified them as “spiritual” as opposed to other kinds of songs.
