Well Worth Repeating–What Cindy Thinks

Categories: food for thought

Cindy posted this on her blog today–an email sent to a lay leader in her congregation in response to a request for input regarding the future of the church. I think these two paragraphs state the case better than any I’ve read in some time. So here they are:

People Who Want to Talk to Bono

Categories: fun, music, What the heck was THAT?

I have a friend I meet with regularly at Starbucks–a musician friend. A couple of times he’s talked about how he’d like to sit down with Bono of U2 and ask him a few questions sometime. I chuckle inside when he tells me this because he sounds so matter-of-fact about it–like the biggest rockstar on the planet is going to sit down with him and have lunch or something.

But the other reason I’m chuckling…is that I feel exactly the same way. I would absolutely love to have lunch with Bono and pick his brain sometime. When I make it big in the music biz, he’ll probably come knock on my dressing room door after a concert sometime, and he and I can go get some coffee, and…

The Great Shift–and My Unwitting Part In It

(The following entry is part of a synchroblog sponsored by Glenn at Re-Dreaming the Dream.)

Two or three years ago, a national Christian magazine published an article about the growing number of “stay-away saints” in America–millions of professing believers who are not regularly attending organized church anymore, but many of whom still maintain a vibrant faith. The article attempted to cover both sides of the trend, quoting people who expressed concerns about it and those who felt perhaps it is the sign of healthy change. But interestingly, the underlying theme of the article, and indeed the entire issue of the magazine, was this: “Come back to church.” Instead of addressing the issues that caused these Christians to feel disillusioned, discontent, or out-of-place in institutional Christianity, the message was just that these people should return to the very institutions that had alienated them, for more of the same.

The Weekend: Rambling On About Nothing In Particular

So I’m sitting here in Panera Bread on a Saturday morning, squinting out the window at the beautiful day on tap, letting my mind wander while my blog page sits open on my laptop, trying to think about what to write. So I’m thinking, Why don’t I just sort of write as I think? Then I can do two things at once. And since I’m trying to learn the art of multi-tasking…there you go.

Thanks to all of you who wrote comments to encourage me the other day while I second-and-third-guessed myself. I am doing a bit better. It turns out that the symptoms of second-guessing-itis can be sharply reduced by ingesting several large glasses of a fruity alcoholic beverage. But I wouldn’t know; I don’t drink. It’s kind of a funny thought, though. (Aren’t you glad I’m writing what pops into my head?)

Thoughts on the Paradox of Faith

Categories: faith, Meanderings (look it up)

Having grown up in the Word-Faith camp, I felt like I knew pretty much everything there was to know about faith, and living by faith.

Then my faith was tested, and I found out how little I knew.

Over an extended period of time, I worked all the faith formulas I knew to resolve a situation in my life. I made positive confessions, declared and prophesied, praised…everything I knew. Nothing budged. And then I did something I never, ever thought I would do.

I gave up.

Second Guessing…and Third…and Fourth…and Fifth…

*Sigh* Time for some vulnerability here.

In times of transition, where everything starts to feel disjointed and disorienting, I have times when I feel completely insecure. As a recovering control freak, I still do not like the feeling of not knowing which way is “up.” I’m in such a time right now. I’ve had a time of respite from some difficult times, but I know God is shifting and changing me on the insides right now, and rattling my comfort zones, in ways that are very disconcerting. It’s a time when I feel like the sheep out of the pen, feeling very overwhelmed, desperate for some point of reference, desperate for the voice of the Shepherd.

What We Were Never Meant to Be

So I’m working out in the gym this morning, and the song “Losing My Religion” by R.E.M. comes up on my ipod. As I listened and pondered the lyrics, I thought about maybe covering that song someday with a band.

And then I remembered a day years ago when that thought would have totally offended me. I used to turn the radio off when that song played, because I assumed it was anti-Christian. Now I have it on my ipod, and the title inspired my blog name.

"The View" No More

Categories: General

It appears that the wildly popular daytime live talk show “The View” is to be cancelled, effective immediately.

Known for previous bouts of infighting among its hosts–the most publicized being the volitile behavior of former host Rosie O’Donnell–after today’s show, apparently words were exchanged between Whoopie Goldberg and Elisabeth Hasselbeck, which escalated into physical contact involving all the hosts. This has prompted ABC to pull the show.

The cameras were still running after today’s show went off the air, and the entire altercation was caught on tape. For more information on this develping story, and to view the video, click here.

De-Construction: Sharing the Love by Linkage

Apparently, unwittingly, and happily (note the amazing use of adverbage), I have found myself in the midst of a wonderful ongoing conversation in the blogosphere. Many are sharing where they are at in their journeys of “de-construction”, of re-thinking and sometimes leaving behind long-standing mindsets about how to “do church” and what “church” should look like, as well as what their own path of discipleship should look like. A lot of great thoughts and comments are being posted by others, both here in the comments and on other blogs.

Here are some more pieces of the conversation, other postings which are worth checking out:
